Atikel Semantics by Dewi Rahmayanti
The word semantics is
actually a technical term that refers to the study of meaning. This term is a
new term in the English language. The
linguists provide an understanding of semantics as a branch of linguistics that
studies the relationship between linguistic signs or signs lingual with things
that indicated they (meaning). Another
term that has been used the same thing is semiotics, semiology, semasiology,
and semetik. Talks about
the meaning of a word into a semantic object.
That's why Lehrer (1974:
1) say that semantics is the study of meaning (see also Lyons 1, 1977: 1), for
Lehrer semantics is a field of study is very comprehensive because it helped
offensive aspects of the structure and function of the language so that it can
be connected with psychology ,
philosophy, and anthropology.
The views were an
assortment of experts mejadikan experts have differences in interpreting the
semantics. Understanding
the different semantics is actually expected to linguistic disciplines to
develop an extremely wide-ranging.
1. Charles Morrist
Suggests that semantic examine "relations with the signs of objects which is a container application of these signs."
2. J.W.M Verhaar; 1981: 9
Suggests that the semantics (English: semantics) means a theory of meaning or significance theory, namely branch investigating systematic language meaning or significance.
3. Lehrer; 1974: 1
Semantics is the study of meaning. For Lehrer, semantics is a very broad field of study, because it helped offensive aspects of the structure and function of the language so that it can be connected with psychology, philosophy and anthropology.
4. Kambartel (in Bauerk, 1979: 195)
Semantics assumes that the language consists of a structure that reveals the meaning when linked to the objects in the world of human experience.
5. Britanika Encyclopedia (Encyclopedia Britannica, vol.20, 1996: 313)
Semantics is the study of the relationship between a linguistic distinction with the relationship of mental or symbols in speech activity.
6. Dr. Mansoer Pateda
Semantics is subdisiplin discuss linguistic meaning.
7. Abdul Chaer
Semantics is the study of meaning or the meaning. That is one of 3 (three) level of analysis of language (phonology, grammatical and semantic).

Semantics is the study of meaning or the meaning. That is one of 3 (three) level of analysis of language (phonology, grammatical and semantic).
Semantics implies the
study of meaning to the notion that the meaning becomes part of the language,
the semantic part of linguistics. Semantic actually a science of meaning, in
English called meaning. Semantic word itself
comes from the Greek. That
sema (noun) meaning "mark" or "emblem". The
verb is semaino which means "mark" or "represents". Then
semantic agreed as that term is used in the field of linguistics to study the
relationship between linguistic signs with something that is being marked.
In addition in the
history of linguistic semantic term is also used terms such as semiotics,
semiology, semasiology, sememik, and semik which is a field of study that
studied the meaning of a symbol or a mark on the object broader coverage that
include symbols or signs in general. Unlike
the semantic terms used in the field of linguistic studies.
2. History of Semantics
Semantics in Indonesian language derived from
English semantics, from the Greek Sema (noun) 'mark': or from the verb samaino
'mark', 'mean'. The
term used by linguists to describe parts of linguistics that studies the
meaning. Semantics
is part of a three-level languages which include phonology, grammar
(morphology-syntax) and semantics.
The new semantic term appeared in 1984, known
through the American Philological Association 'organization philology America'
in an article titled Reflected Meanings: A point in Semantics. The
term semantic itself has existed since the 17th century when considered through
the phrase semantics philosophy. Semantic
history can be read in the article "An Account of the Word Semantics
(Word, 4 th 1948: 78-9). Breal
through his article entitled "Le Lois Intellectuelles du Language"
expresses term preformance semantics as the new field of science, in French
terms as a purely historical science (historical semantics).
Historical semantics tend to learn the semantics
associated with extra-linguistic elements, such as changes in meaning with
logic, psychology, and so on. Reisig
(1825) as one of the classic expert reveals new concept of grammar (grammar),
which includes three main elements, namely the etymology, the study of the
origin of the word in relation to changes in form and meaning; syntax,
syntax in semasiology, science sign (meaning).
